Klout: You can not measure online influence -

... but you can certainly find better indications for it than the number of followers on Twitter or friends of Facebook -

Klout is a service attempting to measure the overall online influence of people. Klout has recently gotten more attention, closed a financing round yesterday of 8.5 million USD and I expect Klout to continue to get more attention.
Online influence can not be measured - but indications about it has become increasingly important. We interact with an increasing number of people in the social universe every day - and with everything we read, we have to quickly judge the credibility & reach of the author: a twitter handle, FB profile etc. How do we do that today? We read the timeline of the author, search for him on google, twitter etc - this is however time consuming, and we can not do it for everyone we interact with - so, we often simply see, how many friends or followers he has. This would give a good indication, but can also be manipulated easily, and there are many consultants & services to help you with this (1000 twitter followers for 20 USD).

Klout is attempting to do the same thing in social media, as Google did 10 years ago for search: measuring indicators of quality & importance, which are not easy to manipulate. For Google, it was mainly about the "linking in": you can fill your web site with keywords, in order to be ranked high - but its much more difficult to get other pages to link to your page.

Klout doesnt simply measure, how many people follow you, but rather, how many ACTIVE people follow, how many times you are mentioned, how many re-tweets, comments you get etc.

Of course, all that can also be manipulated, and there are already new consultants & services to boost your Klout score - but, as google got smarter, Klout (or a competitor) will get. And the question is not about measuring influence, but rather about having good indicators of the reach, the credibility and the impact a person has. And I would love to have on twitter, together with the nr of followers, the Klout score on everyones profile -
